Kotaku are reporting that THQ has shipped 2 million copies of Saints Row 2. As we all know Saints Row 2 is a bit of an underdog in the GTA v Saints Row battle but if you read some of the comments on Kotaku's news post you will see some interesting opinions. I haven't had a chance to write a GTAIV - Saints Row 2 comparison yet, but just glancing at some of the comments we can see that Saints Row 2 is building itself quite a following.
TakeTwo was never going to struggle to shift copies of GTAIV but figures released today show that from release to August 16th it has managed to sell 10 million copies worldwide and rake in an $433.8 million in revenue from the third quarter.
Also Kotaku reports that San Andreas sold 12 million copies worldwide, and TakeTwo has every intention of promoting GTAIV throughout the holiday season.
NPD, Chart-Track and Enterbrain have announced sale data from the US, UK and Japan.
| Rank | Title | Total | US | UK | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GRAND THEFT AUTO IV | 6,293,000 | 4,711,000 | 1,582,000 | -- |
| 2 | SUPER SMASH BROS: BRAWL | 5,433,000 | 3,539,000 | 213,000 | 1,681,000 |
| 3 | MARIO KART WII | 4,697,000 | 2,409,000 | 687,000 | 1,601,000 |
| 4 | WII FIT | 3,604,000 | 1,433,000 | 624,000 | 1,547,000 |
| 5 | GUITAR HERO III: LEGENDS OF ROCK | 3,475,000 | 3,037,000 | 412,000 | 26,000 |
As you can see GTAIV has sold almost 6.3 million copies.
Next-Gen.biz have posted an article with a few predictions to do with this year’s big releases.
"...Before the first half of 2008 ends, we can expect the release of AAA titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (expected to achieve 13.95 million units of GLS [global lifetime sales]), Wii Fit (expecting 8.7 million units of GLS), Grand Theft Auto IV (expecting 17 million units of GLS), and Metal Gear Solid 4 (expecting 4.7 million units of GLS)."
17 million is a big number but perhaps not so if you take into account San Andrea’s selling an estimated 20 million units to date, and that coupled with the fact this is a dual next-gen platform release.
